Founded in November 2020 as a virtual outlet during the pandemic,

Dragonfly Theatre Company produced new plays on zoom.

Dragonfly Theatre went into hiatus in May of 2022 as theaters resumed live programming.

Jean Gottlieb (Artistic Director/Founder of Dragonfly Theatre Company) and Omar Fernandez (former Artistic Director of Subtext Studio at UIC) joined forces in 2022, combining the missions and resources of Dragonfly Theatre and Subtext Studio Theatre Companies. For three seasons (2023-2026) Subtext Studio Theatre produced exciting new plays, a New Play Festival and helped to developed many new plays by BIPOC and LGBTQ+ playwrights.

Dragonfly Theatre Company continues the important work of championing new playwrights, creating a sacred space for the creation of new theatrical works, and providing a safe home for the artists by following a production model that honors and promotes collaboration, respect and inclusion on all levels.

Dragonfly Theater provides an open atmosphere for creation and expression, a space where an artist is seen and heard. In an industry (and world) where women over fifty tend to become invisible and their experience and wisdom is dismissed, we provide a creative space where

mature artists are honored as vital to the creation of theater.
